Strengthening Animal Health and Welfare Across Tasmania
The Animal Health and Welfare Project supported Tasmanian farmers to strengthen livestock health, welfare, and handling practices through practical training, tools, and accessible resources.
Funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Strategic Industry Partnership Program (SIPP) via the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), the program was delivered collaboratively by Tas Farmers and Sprout Tasmania to support producers across the state.
Animal Health and Welfare Overview
Livestock health and welfare are critical to farm productivity, resilience, and public confidence in agriculture. However, producers can face barriers accessing practical training and tools that support consistent best practice on farm.
This project focused on equipping farmers with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to improve livestock management and welfare outcomes.
Key areas of support included:
- Knowledge sharing across the sector
- Practical health and welfare resources
- Training in low-stress livestock handling techniques
- Tools to support informed decision-making on farm
Training and Capacity Building
As part of the program, Low Stress Stock Handling workshops were delivered across Tasmania in collaboration with Nic Kentish, providing hands-on training for producers.
These workshops supported farmers to develop practical skills that:
- Improve livestock welfare outcomes
- Reduce stress and injury to livestock
- Increase safety for handlers
- Improve productivity and farm performance
Alongside the workshops, practical tools and resources were developed to support producers in applying best practice livestock health and welfare on their farms.
Low Stress Stock Handling Tools and Resources
This collaboration has produced a suite of tools designed to support ongoing improvements in livestock management.
