Supporting Small-Scale Farmers through advocacy and reform

Small-scale farmers play a crucial role in food security, biodiversity, and rural economies. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices preserves our environment and supports local economies. However, they often face significant challenges, including limited access to resources, financial instability, and policy barriers.

This is where we aim to help. Sprout exists to grow and support our industry and advocate for policies and practices that ensure sustainable growth, equitable access to resources, and a prosperous future for these essential stewards of the land.

ongoing focus areas

Right now, the areas we are focused on are:

Advocating for a dedicated small-scale producer strategy within State Government to recognise and support the vital role of small farms in Tasmania’s food system.

Championing improved meat processing and service-kill access, including working with government, regulators and industry groups to secure fit-for-purpose solutions for livestock producers.

Working with government and regulatory bodies to ensure practical, fair and achievable standards for leafy greens, berry, melon and other horticultural producers.

Supporting fair and consistent accreditation pathways for Tasmania’s commercial egg producers, ensuring small producers aren’t left behind by regulatory change.

Pushing for better access to capital and financial support for small-scale and regenerative farmers, advocating for funding models that reflect the realities of small farm businesses.

Advocating for meaningful education and training pathways that prepare new and emerging producers for small-scale, mixed-enterprise farming in Tasmania.

Promoting policies that strengthen a resilient, localised food system, ensuring government recognises the importance of short supply chains and local production.

Ensuring environmental and regulatory decisions support sustainable, regenerative agriculture, protecting soil health, landscapes and long-term farm viability.
