Tasmania Micro & Mobile Abattoir Guidelines (2026 Consultation)
Draft guidelines for establishing and operating micro and mobile livestock processing facilities (micro abattoirs) in Tasmania have been released for public consultation by Biosecurity Tasmania (NRE Tas).
Feedback is due by 5pm, 30th March.

our thoughts
STAMP and Sprout believe this work is an important step in clarifying the current pathway for gaining approvals for micro and mobile livestock processing facilities in Tasmania.
The draft guidelines highlight just how complex the regulatory process remains for establishing a meat processing facility, particularly for small-scale producers.
While we see limited need for changes within the documentation itself, the real opportunity lies in what comes next.
Your next steps
Submit your feedback on the draft guidelines and the broader regulatory process to Biosecurity Tasmania—this is your opportunity to have your say on the future of small-scale livestock processing in Tasmania.
To support you, STAMP and Sprout have developed two submission templates: one for consumers (chefs and eaters) and one for producers.

background
The guidance document was developed in response to a petition submitted to the Premier in March 2025, initiated by STAMP.
A working group was convened in March 2025 to inform the development of the guidance document and roadmap. This group included representatives from the principal petitioner, the Southern Tasmanian Association of Meat Processors (STAMP), Sprout Tasmania, TasFarmers, relevant government departments, local councils, and broader industry stakeholders.
