Coolgardie Farm
2026 Sprout Producer Program
Coolgardie Farm is a family farm in Richmond in Tasmania’s Coal Valley, shaped by low rainfall, and soils that reflect decades of intensive agricultural use. It is run by Daniel and Anita Long, alongside their children Audrey and Henry, the fifth generation connected to this land.
Daniel brings farming knowledge passed through family traditions, while Anita contributes a background in small business and entrepreneurship. Over time, and influenced by experiences within their farming community, they reconsidered chemical use and shifted away from high intensity farming. They recognised the land needed rest, renewal, diversification, and a more resilient future.
Today, the farm operates primarily as a sheep enterprise producing fat lambs, supported by cattle, emerging haskap or honeyberry crops, and beekeeping. A 300 acre private forest reserve protects biodiversity, while regenerative practices such as rotational grazing and non chemical practices are improving soil health, strengthening pasture resilience, and supporting animal wellbeing. Alongside farming, the family runs Hive & Cob, a confectionery business producing honey based popcorn sold at Salamanca Market and through stockists across Tasmania.
Coolgardie Farm also hosts the Bee Hub for Tasmanian Junior Beekeepers as a separate on farm initiative, supporting youth education and community engagement. Anita’s community work has been recognised through volunteering awards, including Rural Women awards, and she is a Churchill Fellow.
Looking ahead, the Longs aim to grow direct to consumer markets and share their journey through agri tourism opportunities, showcasing a working farm transitioning from an industrial model to a regenerative future, while maintaining balance for family life and the land.
