Little Sando

Little Sando is a 9-acre farm in Sandford on Tasmania’s South Arm Peninsula, owned by Tania and Davey. Michael and Davey began collaborating after recognising their shared belief that food should be grown in ways that respect nature and nourish people. Davey grew up in Sandford and, as an avid surfer, has always felt connected to the coastline. Both he and Michael were concerned about the growing reliance on large-scale agriculture and food transported thousands of kilometres, and they wanted to create something local, resilient, and grounded in best-practice, biology-driven methods.

Together, Michael and Davey tend a 30-square-metre plot within Little Sando. They use organic practices that focus on building soil biology and working with Sandford’s flat, sandy–clayey soils and drier conditions. Much of their work begins before planting, collecting fish waste, coffee grounds, supermarket food waste, and neighbours’ green waste to create biologically rich compost.

By closing local waste loops and feeding soil biology, Little Sando grows nutrient-dense food and returns it to the same community that helped create it. It is a small farm with a clear purpose: to strengthen soil, people, and place by working with natural systems.
