Sprout President - Recognition as Senior Tasmanian of the Year 2018!

Tony Scherer, founded Sprout with Dr Alice Percy back on 2011, to support and share knowledge with those keen to become small producers in Tasmania, but his journey on the land began long before this.  Tony has devoted his life to organic farming and promoting sustainable farming methods for almost 50 years, both in his home town of California and here in Australia, because he says it always made sense to him.

Speaking to Tony yesterday about his upcoming trip to Canberra to attend the Australian of the Year Award ceremony, he is excited to meet his fellow 31 recipients from across the country.  "It will be great, to meet them all, hear their stories and find out what they are passionate about. Just a privilege to be involved in it all, regardless of the outcome." Tony was humbled when he found out he was named as the 2018 Senior Tasmanian of the Year, but was thrilled that is will get people talking about the possibilities Tasmania has to grow our own food. "I would really like to see more small-scale farms established in Tasmania, so we have more produce and restaurants and individuals have more choice and access to fresh, sustainably farmed produce grown right around the corner."

Sprout GM, Jennifer Robinson says the contribution Tony has made to the state of Tasmania is incredible, "We are so lucky to have Tony Scherer call our island home. Tony is always ready to share his wealth of knowledge with others and continues to attend all Sprout Producer field days to be a sounding board for discussions about on-farm challenges.  He loves being a part of the Tasmanian food community, he supports our local chefs with not only his produce but with hands on growing experience too, as many of them have spent regular or ad-hoc time on his farm in the Coal Valley."

We will be tuned in to the live ABC TV broadcast from Canberra of the Australian of the Year Ceremony on the eve of Australia Day at 7.30pm, with our fingers and toes crossed for you Tony!
